Henry Ryan MacGinnis, 1875-1962, was born in Indiana and began his art studies under the eminent Hoosier artists T.C. Steele, J.O. Adams and William Forsyth. One of his earliest exhibitions was in 1896, when he showed his work with other notable Hoosier artists such as T.C. Steele, J. Ottis Adams, R.B. Gruelle, William Forsyth, Otto Stark and Clarence Ball. In 1900, MacGinnis left Indiana to study in Europe. For five years, he painted and studied in Paris and Munich, where he won Honorable Mention from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He was a member of the Audubon Artists, Hoosier Salon, Salmagundi Club, and Allied Artists. In 1908, soon after MacGinnis returned to the states, William Merritt Chase, chairman of the Exhibition Committee of the 19th Annual Exhibition of the Art Club in Philadelphia, selected the MacGinnis painting New Hampshire Hills for an important exhibit. The show included paintings from other artists such as Mary Cassatt, Ernest Lawson, Childe Hassam and William Merritt Chase. A broad look at MacGinnis' work suggests a concern with impressionism; however, for the most part, MacGinnis stayed within the realm of realism often softened by an impressionistic approach. As mentioned, MacGinnis began painting with the Hoosier artists in Indiana, primarily focusing on landscapes from that region. In 1924, MacGinnis moved to Trenton, New Jersey where he both taught and continued to paint. He focused on painting portraits and landscapes near the Delaware River and New Hope, Pennsylvania region. During this period, he also painted many landscapes and seascapes in Provincetown, Massachusetts, Cape Breton, New Jersey, and in Vermont and New Hampshire.

Hyneman was a noted American portrait and figure painter with ties to both Philadelphia and New York. He was born July 27,1849 to Leon and Adeline Hyneman in Philadelphia. ("Who Was Who in American Art" lists his birth date as either 1849 or 1859, but we have confirmed that the birth date is 1849). Virtually nothing is known about his early years, but given the fact that the family resided in a wealthy section of Philadelphia and the fact that he traveled to Paris to study in the studio of Leon Bonnat when he was but 20 years old, it is presumed that the family was financially comfortable if not well to do. Hyneman exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1879 and 1881, which was quite an accomplishment given his tender age. He returned to the United States in 1882 and after a year in Philadelphia, he established a studio at 58 West 57th Street, New York, NY, where he painted portraits to support himself and scenes of beautiful fair-skinned women walking in the snow to exhibit at major exhibitions throughout the United States. Hyneman exhibited at the the Brooklyn Art Association in 1882, 1883 and 1884 and at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1883 and 1888. Beginning in 1882 and continuing up until 1905, he exhibited regularly at the National Academy of Design. Despite the fact that he exhibited fourteen paintings at the National Academy over a span of three different decades, he was never elected as a member. In the 1880's his paintings sold for between $100 and $1500, which were substantial sums for that period. Hyneman also exhibited at the Salmagundi Club and the Philadelphia Art Club and was a member of each organization. He won a medal at the American Art Society in 1904 and also exhibited at the Chicago Art Institute. A handwritten label on one of his paintings indicates that he also exhibited in Budapest, Hungary. In 1892, Hyneman married the noted artist Juliet Jolley (aka Jolly), who had previously modeled for him. Thereafter, they shared a studio and on at least one occasion exhibited together. The February 5, 1896 edition of the "New York Times" reported on a "pleasant studio reception" at 58 West 57th Street where the paintings of both Herman and Juliet were shown to members of New York Society including Mr. And Mrs. Edwin Blashfield. At least one of Hyneman's Painting " A Sensation on Wall Street" which depicted a lovely young woman in fur coat with Muff in front of the Stock Exchange, was made into a post card and reproductions of his paintings are known to exist, although not plentiful.     Framed Size: 29 x 38.5 inches Lilian MacKendrick was a natural born artist. She had a talent that was intuitive and a searching artistic intellect. The daughter of Russian emigrants, she grew up in the art world of New York's Armory Show. A graduate of New York University with a degree in Fine Arts, she went on to study sculpture at City College of New York as well as painting at the Art Students League. Her early attempts were in the non-objective field. Despite her tremendous admiration for the great European painters of the 18th & 19th centuries (she copied, as a learning exercise, all the drawings of Goya and Rembrandt in this country), her tastes, since childhood, were for Oriental rather than American and European painting which she found "too violent." But she continued her exploration of the fusion of East and West, arriving at a synthesis that has been described, among other things, as a "recovery of the image." Some of her work, however, has echoes of the work of the French masters Pierre Bonnard and Henri Matisse; a reference that the artist herself would not find offensive. She regularly spent summer vacations in France. Many observers of her work say that her paintings make them feel that life is good again; that there is something wonderful and exciting about the world they are eager to see when they wake up in the morning, and that her paintings are 'singular and striking'. Jane Janson's statement in regards to MacKendrick's 1958 exhibition at Hirschl & Adler Galleries easily applies to some of her painting: "Her range of blazing summer color and exuberant pattern captivate the eye, and lend renewed zest to a realm which has been ignored for awhile, and to which we return with instinctive delight." "Has seen" is the operative phrase because her works are rarely seen these days, although there are over 400 works in private collections. A devastating flood in her studio in 1984 destroyed a number of works.
